Started off as a smooth-hitting catcher who made his big-league debut as a September 2009 call-up, and earned regular duty as R. A. Dickey's semi-personal catcher. While that job kept him in the bigs for nearly a decade, somewhere along the way he almost completely lost his ability to hit.
