Mel was the Mets' pitching coach when the staff featured the likes of Dwight Gooden, David Cone, Sid Fernandez, Bobby Ojeda, Ron Darling, and Rick Aguilera as starters. Needless to say, they won a few games. Mel was also an All-Star pitcher in the '60s with the Yankees, winning 20 games in several seasons. He's shown here on a 1971 Topps Scratch-Offs game card.
