John was born in New York, pitched for the Yankees, worked in the Mets' front office, and died in New York. He is also a member of the New York Mets Hall of Fame, having been the architect of the 1969 World Champions as general manager. The card shown above is from the superb set featuring the stars of the 1930s called America's National Pastime, produced by a company called BLC in 1985.
