Acquired: sent from the Cardinals to complete an earlier deal, October 1967;
the Cardinals sent a player to be named later (Jackson) for Jack
Lamabe
Departed: purchased by the Cincinnati Reds, June 1969
Died: August 18, 2019 in Port St. Lucie, FL
Al was the Mets' pitching ace during the darkest of the dark early
days. With any other club, he most certainly would have been a consistent
winner. As it was, though, he built a long and enduring relationship with the
Mets that continued from 1962 all the way up to the end of the 2000 season,
when he retired as the Mets' bullpen coach. Shown here is his card from 1962 Topps;
