Jack Lynch
John H. Lynch
Batted: Right
Threw: Right
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 185 lbs.
Born: February 5, 1857 in New York, NY
Died: April 20, 1923 in Bronx, NY
In the American Association championship season of 1884, Jack had a spectacularly successful season, matching teammate Tim Keefe almost pitch-for-pitch, both of them winning an astounding 37 games. The next year Keefe was gone to the Giants, but Lynch remained through the rest of the Mets' lean history--the only pitcher to participate in each of the Mets' five seasons. In 1887, all of the New York pitchers were so uniformly bad that Jack was able to claim his only Mets Pitcher of the Year award, by being slightly less bad than the rest of the field. But he would have made the Metropolitans' all-time team anyway, on the strength of that marvelous 1884 season. The picture of Jack shown here is a detail of an 1882 team photo found on Doc Lawson's Vintage Base Ball Page.
